High School Volunteer Abroad Program

The HAF’s High School Volunteer Abroad Program offers young people between the ages of 15-19 an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make a difference volunteering overseas in Africa while experiencing a new culture, gain and learn new skills. Our teen volunteer program is uniquely designed without any skills or qualifications required, just the desire to make a difference. Each volunteer project follows a schedule of taught sessions, hands-on and observational service work, as well as cultural explorative activities and weekend excursions.
Teen Volunteer Abroad Program in Ghana
As a teen volunteer on the project, you will get the chance to acquire and learn new skills - team management, survival in a new place, planning and preparedness, all while becoming an active, global thinker and socially-oriented leader. At HAF, our aim is to immerse students or student groups in a new community and culture to contribute to sustainable development projects. We will ensure that students have a rewarding and life-changing experience they can be proud of. Through hands-on learning experiences, students learn about themselves in a new environment, discover new passions and advance their leadership skills.

YOUR ROLE ON THE PROJECT
Community service is at the heart of what we do at HAF. As a student in the program, you will work in an orphanage, helping with the educational and emotional development of orphans and vulnerable children. You will be a role model, teach English, and assist staff members. As a volunteer in Ghana, you will make a lasting impact on the lives of the children by giving them the extra attention, love, and care that are lacking in their daily lives. You can also assist local teachers in English lessons and other academic subjects. Lessons will focus on improving pronunciation, conversation and grammar skills.

HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCE
Through a variety of activities, you will be immersed in the rich African culture. You will participate in workshops such as African drumming, dance, cloth weaving (kente weaving) and Ga language courses. Additionally, you will obtain leadership skills as you meet with inspirational grassroots leaders to learn how they are addressing the pressing issues facing Ghanaian children and communities underprivileged.

SAFETY AND SUPERVISION
At HAF, we understand that teens who travel abroad to volunteer need structure, a safe environment, and support from qualified staff. With that in mind, we have designed a program itinerary for each day’s activity, fully supervised by our professional staff. Our High School Volunteers are never alone. After their busy daily schedule is completed, volunteers return home to their host family in groups of two or more per family. Our local staff is on hand 24/7 to provide assistance on any matter, from the application process right through to the completion of their volunteer program.

Meals: Students will be served three healthy meals daily - breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Volunteers will enjoy delicious meals like rice and chicken, vegetable stew and yams and traditional Ghanaian cuisine such as fufu and soup, banku and okra stew. Vegetables and fruits will also be served. Our host family is willing to meet the needs of our volunteers and every dietary requirement.

HAF Home-Stay: HAF provides a decent, clean and safe accommodation for all our volunteers. Our accommodation is situated in Nungua on the outskirts of Accra, Ghana’s capital and Kukurantumi in Eastern Ghana. Students will stay with our hospitable host family in housing consisting of comfortable rooms in a safe, conveniently located neighborhood, clean and fenced. Lodging arrangements consist of modern toilet facility and running water. Students will share a room together in gender-segregated group lodging.
